Reminiscences of a Hebridean School Master 1890 — 1913

Birlinn, 1997

[Klappentext]

In 1889 Frederick Rea arrived from the Midlands to teach in South Uist, at that time one of the poorest places in the Outer Hebrides. Roads were often no more than rough tracks across the mountain moorland or over the storm-swept machair, and his Gaelic-speaking pupils were often frozen and starving.

In this extraordinary book, he recounts the years he spent in this remote corner of Scotland, where he was welcomed with uncommon kindness and generosity by the islanders, who found him to be a sincere, conscientious man and an excellent teacher. The book also reveals Rea´s keen powers of observation as he describes the lonely, ruggedly beautiful landscape and the customs and lifestyle of the people. Frederick Rea treasured his memories of South Uist for the rest of his life, and his love and respect for the islands and islanders is wonderfully conveyed in this vivid testament.

[Klappentext]

Orphaned and left penniless, David Balfour sets out to find his last living relative, miserly and reclusive Uncle Ebenezer. But Ebenezer is far from welcoming, and David narrowly escapes being murdered before he is kidnapped and imprisoned on a ship bound for the Carolinas. When the ship is wrecked, David, along with fiery rebel Alan Breck, makes his way back across the treacherous Highland terrain on a quest to see that justice is done. Through his powerful depiction of the contrasting personalities of his two central characters — the romantic Breck and the rationalist Whig David — Stevenson dramatized a conflict that was at the heart of Scottish culture in the aftermath of the Jacobite rebellion, as well as creating an unforgettable adventure story.

Voices from Lost Communities in Scotland — The Islands

Birlinn, 2000

234 d.

[Klappentext]

This volume forms the third part of Timothy Neat´s quintet of books on Highland life in the twentieth century. It documents the lives of selected individuals via a combination of personal reminiscence, history, photography, poetry and story. Together with its companion volume on the Highlands and east coast, it forms a unique picture of Scotland´s lost communities through the experience of those who either grew up in them, or whose roots are inextricably connected with them. The result is a fascinating record of Scotland on the very edge of memory.

The classic story of a life´s devotion to otters

Fifty years ago Gavin Maxwell went to live in an abandoned house on a shingle beach on the west coast of Scotland. With its small bay and islands, magical waterfall and encircling stream of vivid water, his remote home was a haven for wildlife. He named it Camusfeàrna and settled there with the otters Mij, Edal and Teko.
