This volu­me forms the third part of Timo­thy Neat´s quin­tet of books on High­land life in the twen­tieth cen­tu­ry. It docu­ments the lives of sel­ec­ted indi­vi­du­als via a com­bi­na­ti­on of per­so­nal remi­nis­cence, histo­ry, pho­to­gra­phy, poet­ry and sto­ry. Tog­e­ther with its com­pa­n­ion volu­me on the High­lands and east coast, it forms a uni­que pic­tu­re of Scotland´s lost com­mu­ni­ties through the expe­ri­ence of tho­se who eit­her grew up in them, or who­se roots are inex­tri­ca­bly con­nec­ted with them. The result is a fasci­na­ting record of Scot­land on the very edge of memory.
